Empower Women!

The semi-annual Gabriel Pearce Memorial Scholarship Fund Craft and Vendor Show was a great success! A variety of vendors sold their wares, and many customers showed up. I understand the turn-out is even better in October, which I plan to attend. I sold my books at special sale prices, as well as several hand-crafted jeweled book marks.

I won in the Raffle! What did I win? Pepper Spray, in a cute pink camouflage holder!

Until my winning, I hadn’t thought much about women’s self-defense, which is odd since I am an advocate for women’s recovery from domestic violence. TheDamsel strives to equip, empower, and educate women. In the Nomore.org brochure they provide alarming statistics:

A violent crime occurs every 26 seconds

1 in 3 women experience domestic violence from their partners

1 in 5 women are survivors of rape

A child is abducted every 40 seconds

Also, in HuffingonPost, In a Culture of Rape, How can We Not Insist That Women Learn Self-Defense?, Avial Zeisler gave argument for women’s self-defense training as a priority, and suggested various ways this can be accomplished. Zeisler had survived a horrible physical and sexual attack. By facing her experience, working through flash-backs, and learning self-defense techniques – she was empowered.

I encourage women to educate themselves about self-defense and to decide if there’s more they should do to protect themselves.
